From msundell65 at hotmail.com Tue Nov 13 20:15:18 2018 From: msundell65 at hotmail.com (marianne sundell) Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2018 01:15:18 +0000 Subject: [wendell-meetinghouse] Wendell Meetinghouse Update Message-ID: Dear Friends & Neighbors of the Wendell Meetinghouse, It has been many months since I have updated our members about the work of our non-profit. After about 20 years of lots of volunteering in various capacities for the Wendell community from writing bylaws, warrant articles, & open space plans, to coordinating Meetinghouse benefits, starting the holiday fair & ensuring the town forests have habitat to support grouse, all while single parenting & living through seven years of parental advanced cancer, and more recently the combination of managing major medical issues and needing to move for health related reasons have proved to much for me. This year I have just needed to rest and focus on taking care of myself and focusing on that has been lovely. In the meantime, there is still good news for Friends of the Wendell Meetinghouse and the community at large. Court Dorsey heeded my call for a volunteer to become the new president at the Vision Circle we held in January. After we worked together for a few months to bring him up to speed, he began assembling a fine team of volunteers to carry on with our mission of restoring and re-opening the building. This group, which includes a balance of both past active Friends and new volunteers includes nine people willing to serve on the board including volunteers for all the officers positions. Several others have stepped up to assist with more specific tasks. As many of you know Friends of the Wendell Meetinghouse will be the beneficiary of the Wendell Full Moon Coffeehouse this Saturday, so Court and the group will be filling in more details about their plans soon. When I got re-involved with FWM while Nan was President the group had been doing some good work raising funds & planned a lovely event, but the youngest active member was about sixty and they had neither a working website or a presence on social media. When it became my turn to serve as the president, addressing these gaps became my top priorities and I am pleased to report that this endeavor was a great success. Several younger folks have stepped up to serve as officers, play supporting roles, and share their talents over the last several years. As I suspected, they were also well equipped to help bring us up to date in cyberspace. Looking back, there are so very many people I want to thank for their contributions to the cause while I served as president. Starting with the next generation, I am proud to thank both my kids Lilly, who created our website and even taught me to manage it & Justin who served as treasurer after Gail Krutka needed to step down. Kate Lee was also an amazing help with serving as clerk and producing beautiful newsletters. Laura Morin also served as clerk for several months. For everyone who attended our very first benefit event, Ajika Sawyer clearly stole the show! I am so pleased to learn her family plans to get more involved with FWM. My other top priority over my time as president was to combine fundraising with following some advice we were given by Stan Rosenberg and Denise Andrews. They suggested that we needed to find ?cultural partners? and demonstrate community support & interest in using the building. With these goals in mind, I coordinated a series of benefit events and so very many amazing talented people stepped up to perform that I am still in awe of the great abundance of creativity in our community. All of this fun we had will provide excellent grant documentation. Thank you to all of you with a special shout out to Kellianna, Perry Howarth, and Shelly Hines who each played a big role in coordinating their events. Then there are all the local businesses and artisans who have pitched in raffle prizes year afte year, along with former resident Kuumba Piazza. So many other folks have also pitched in from Tom Chaisson?s amazing price for painting the building, to Adam and Eric?s delicious local feast at our first event, to Doug Smith?s abundant cider one Holiday Fair, to the the Wendell Community Chorus members donation of baked sale goods at our last concert, to Court who relived me of this duty. While I hate to leave anyone out, so very many people have pitched in to help our cause in recent years that I must. Its wonderful to see that as the Friends move forward more members of the next generation have continued to volunteer to keep the projecting moving along. Once again we can look forward to a multigenerational group with a presence in cyberspace and ever abundant well of talent and creativity! Best of luck to the new crew. First, FWM longest serving member Charles Smith who had also been a member of the former congregation. Charles served as the first president of friends and remained on the board until when medical trouble created a need for him to finally step down. At that time he had been serving as VP. Charles was very passionate about seeing a new coat of paint on the building & made a sizable contribution to this cause. Along with contributions from the next generation, Charles was one of several older members of our board. Ray Gentl of New Salem also served on our board for several years. Michael Noble of Northfield also contributed time, energy, wisdom and some awesome raffle prizes. Sarah Kohler, also of New Salem and Gail Krutka who both served as treasurer. This help from folks in neighboring towns is really important, as Stan and Denise advised us that we will have a much better shot at state grants if our project serves regional needs, rather than only those of the town. Otherwise, there are still far too many others who have supported the cause to mention everybody. However there are a couple other behind the scenes people I?d like to mention. One person who nobody else ever saw but me was my dear late friend Jeff Martell who is well know for his work with the Green River Festival. Jeff and I were close friends for decades and when it came to events he was always my greatest inspiration & my go to guy to mull over ideas and get feedback. We had just started planning a Kirtan Meetinghouse benefit when he was killed in a car crash on the day that hideous blue roof that know covers the entire view from my former home. Finally, I want to mention Sam Eide. Frequently, when I felt troubled about something meetinghouse related and was trying to sort out the best course of action, I would talk to Sam who always listened patiently and gave wise feedback. I just wish that a divisive issue over owner rights to choose the color of one?s own roof vs neighbor aesthetics was not imbedded in the thanks, as that is a personal issue that has nothing to do with the Meetinghouse revival. I like to remember your contributions positively. You gave your all to the Meetinghouse. Thank you! The health of the Meetinghouse is starting to grow into a common goal that many are coming to feel part of. This effort stands on a lot of shoulders. I really should not have cc?s the Meetinghouse e-mail list on my last comments. While we occasionally get into this kind of subject matter on the town list, that has never been true of the meetinghouse list. As you can see, Kathy?s comments really hit a nerve and made me very upset. It did not even occur to me that she would have sent them to this list for the reason above, so I ended up hitting send and then going whoops. I really wish neither post had ended up on this list, as I know Court and the rest of the group have been working really hard to prepare to present their future plans to the rest of us and my hope is that this can take center stage rather than my health issues or Kathy?s need to publicly critique my earlier post. I hear that will be happening really soon, so stay tuned! This will be the first of three meetings to discuss and brainstorm the vision for the renovation and usage of the Meetinghouse, to discuss fund-raising strategies for opening the Meetinghouse by summer 2021 (its 175th birthday), to confirm its interim board members and officers, and to discuss and approve changes to its articles and bylaws. In alignment with our Articles of Incorporation, membership in the Friends of the Wendell Meetinghouse is open to those who wish to work together to preserve and maintain the Meetinghouse; voting membership is extended to anyone who attends three consecutive meetings. The Friends of the Wendell Meetinghouse By-laws also note that members pay annual fees, but that the Board of Directors may grant waivers of those obligations. For purposes of these three meetings, payment of dues or lack of thereof will not affect or determine voting membership status. The current Board of Directors (one member confirmed at the last annual meeting, others filled in accordance with the By-laws by a majority vote at subsequent Board meetings) seeks community input and engagement, and welcomes all who believe they are members and all who have an interest in the Friends of the Wendell Meetinghouse to be present for three consecutive membership meetings. We will hold these meetings over the next few months and conclude this phase of our work in January. For planning purposes, it would be helpful to have a list of those persons likely to attend. Please RSVP to Court Dorsey court at crocker.com if you are planning to come. The Friends are excited to be starting on this new phase of our work together to help revitalize our historic Meetinghouse, and to initiate a new period of creative and spiritual programming in our community. Membership is one way to be involved. Please join us. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... First, from a reporter?s perspective the big headline is that by combining previous volunteers, my suggestions, and his own initiative, Court has assembled a dream team that includes many of the brightest minds in town! So be sure to check out the Full Moon Coffeehouse house tonight to help support their efforts & learn more details. The very interesting synchronicity in this meetinghouse transition story is that Court is my oldest friend in Wendell by many years. We met each other in the late seventies when be still lived in the mid-west and I was in high school in Washington DC, long before either of us ever heard of Wendell. He was performing anti-nuclear street theater in front of the NRC, and I went down to cover it for the independent high school newspaper that I ran with my friends. Later when he moved to New England he became a part of the band ?Bright Morning Star? who would come down to DC venues on tour. I must have been about sixteen, as I had the biggest crush on him before finding a boy friend was I was seventeen. In pondering Karen?s post, it seems to me that Sam Eide has his own gifts that are distinct from his parents. He says restoring old buildings and running non-profits are more his parents thing than his own. Sam is a wise man. He?s wise before his time, as they say, through a combination of temperament and experience. Molly though he?s make a great therapist and I agree. I would check in with him only wrestling with related ethical or interpersonal issues, not logistics. As for the pinch of star dust-aside from all the amazing performers who have plugged in to support the Friends of the Wendell Meetinghouse- an interesting tidbit. I discover that my last event, the Vision Circle, happened to fall on a day when ?the moon is the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars? which only happens about every twenty years. Curiously, they also filmed the movie version of ?Hair? in DC in likely the same year that Court and I met. Being the stickler for legal detail that I am , I also want to note that right now Court is the acting president, as is true for the rest of the team. Apparently, under state law, until the election has been held myself , Charles Smith, Kate Lee, and Justin Sundell-Thomas are the officers of legal record. So please also come out to Friends annual meeting and vote in numbers never seen before to keep the trend going & welcome in Court and his team! Finally, I want to extend a huge thank-you to Court for taking on running the friends when I was much in need of a break and too beset with medical troubles to really do the job, and also to those who have stepped up to join him.
